You can get married in Georgia on a tourist visa, an e-visa or a visa-free entry stamp. The registry does not need a special visa; it needs proof that each foreign partner is in the country lawfully on the day. Here is who enters without a visa, when a residence permit from another country gets you in, how the e-visa works, and what to show at the Public Service Hall.

Can You Get Married in Georgia on a Tourist Visa?

Yes. Georgian law sets one condition on a foreign partner's immigration status: you must be in Georgia lawfully when you register, and you prove it with a document. A visa-free entry, a short-term visa and a residence permit all meet that condition, so you do not need a special visa to marry.

There is no residency requirement and no minimum stay, and you choose where in Georgia to register. Everything else about how to get married in Georgia as a foreigner works the same whatever stamp is in your passport: a joint application, 2 adult witnesses with ID, and a registration that is free without a ceremony.

Which way you enter depends on your passport first and your residence permit second.

Visa-Free Countries for Georgia

Georgia's visa-free list is set by a government ordinance, last amended in February 2026, and names 91 countries plus 5 groups of overseas territories. Their citizens enter without a visa and can stay a full year, which covers any wedding trip. The one exception is China: Chinese citizens get 30 days, and only for tourism.

The list includes all 27 EU member states, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Israel, and all 6 Gulf Cooperation Council states: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. It runs well past those names, so a passport from elsewhere may still be on it; check yours before you apply for any visa.

At the border your passport is stamped, and that entry stamp marks the start of your lawful stay. The same stamp is what you show at the registry on the wedding day.

From our Tbilisi team

If either of you holds 2 passports, enter Georgia on the one you will register with. The entry stamp and the name on your application then sit in one document, and nobody at the desk has to match 2 passports to 1 person.

Entering Georgia on a Residence Permit From Another Country

A passport that is not on the visa-free list can still get you in without a Georgian visa. A second ordinance names 50 places whose visa or residence permit lets the holder enter Georgia and stay 90 calendar days in any 180-day period.

The visa or permit has to be valid on the day you cross the border. That opens the route to anyone living in Europe, Britain, North America, Australia or the Gulf on a residence permit, whatever their passport. A Pakistani partner working in Riyadh on a Saudi residence permit enters this way, subject to the expiry rule below.

Places whose visa or residence permit gives visa-free entry to Georgia
RegionPlaces on the list
EuropeAll 27 EU states, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, which covers every Schengen state
United KingdomThe UK, its overseas territories and the Crown dependencies
North AmericaUnited States, Canada
Asia and the PacificAustralia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea
Middle EastIsrael, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman
Other territoriesDanish, Dutch and French overseas territories

Holders can stay up to 90 calendar days in any 180-day period. The visa or permit must be valid on the day of entry.

For couples living in the UAE on a residence visa, the permit is the way in, and it shapes what happens after the wedding too. The UAE is not in the Apostille Convention, so the certificate needs legalization in Georgia, then attestation by the UAE Embassy in Tbilisi and the UAE foreign ministry, before it counts there.

Check the expiry date on a Gulf permit

Since 16 May 2025, citizens of 17 countries who enter on a Gulf multiple-entry visa or residence permit need at least 1 year of validity left on the day they arrive. The 17 are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen. With 11 months left, the permit no longer gets that partner in, and the trip needs a Georgian visa instead.

Georgia E-Visa for Marriage

If neither your passport nor a permit gets you in visa-free, you need a short-term visa before you travel. You apply from abroad on the Georgian e-visa portal (opens in a new tab), which checks your passport country as you start, because the Foreign Ministry decides which nationalities can use it.

The state fee is USD 20, paid in dollars, plus a 2% service fee, and the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. A decision takes about 5 working days, and the visa gives up to 90 days in any 180-day period or 30 days, depending on your nationality. Apply before you buy flights, so a refusal costs you USD 20 rather than 2 tickets.

Since May 2026 the portal also issues a C5 tourist e-visa: USD 300, valid for 5 years with a 1-year stay, issued on the 5th working day or up to the 10th when extra checks are needed. It suits a couple who will come back to Georgia often; a single wedding trip needs only the standard e-visa. Nationalities that cannot use the portal apply at a Georgian embassy or consulate.

Proof of Lawful Stay at the Public Service Hall

Proof that you are in Georgia lawfully is one of the documents for a Georgian marriage registration, next to both passports and the witnesses' IDs. The official rules do not spell out what counts as proof, so bring every document that shows the basis you entered on.

What each foreign partner brings on the day

  • Your passport, with the entry stamp from this trip
  • The printed e-visa, if you entered on one
  • The residence permit or visa from another country, if you entered on that basis
  • Your Georgian residence card, if you already live in Georgia
  • A passport that shows your name in Latin letters, so it needs no Georgian translation

Only a foreign partner has to prove a lawful stay. If one of you is a Georgian citizen, that partner brings a Georgian ID card and has no stay to prove.

How Long You Need to Stay in Georgia to Marry

Georgia sets no minimum stay. Registration can happen on the day you apply or on any day you pick within the 2 months an application stays valid, so even a 30-day e-visa leaves plenty of room.

The free registration without a ceremony runs Monday to Friday, and a busy office can decline to register you the same day. Ceremonies also run at weekends at Tbilisi Central Public Service Hall and the Wedding Houses. An apostille for your home country is ready on the 8th working day for GEL 30, or on the same day for GEL 150.

From our Tbilisi team

We plan 2 weekdays in Tbilisi for the registration itself: one to apply and register, and one in reserve in case the office is full. If you want the apostilled certificate in your hand before you fly home, add the working days of the apostille speed you pay for.

Couples With Different Passports or Visas

Each foreign partner proves their own lawful stay, so you do not need to enter the same way. A German citizen can arrive visa-free for a year while an Indian partner living in Dubai comes in on a UAE residence permit for 90 days, and they register together like any other couple.

What matters is the shorter of your 2 stays. The wedding date has to fall inside it, because a partner whose permitted days have run out can no longer prove a lawful stay.

Staying in Georgia After the Wedding

A marriage between 2 foreign visitors does not add days to either partner's stay. Each of you keeps the entry terms you arrived on and leaves before they run out.

Marrying a Georgian citizen opens another route. The Public Service Development Agency issues a residence permit for the spouse (opens in a new tab) of a Georgian citizen, and the application has to go in at least 40 calendar days before your lawful stay ends. On a 30-day e-visa that window has closed before you land, so choose the entry route with the permit in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to get married in Georgia?

Only if you need one to enter Georgia at all. The registry asks for proof that you are in the country lawfully, and a visa-free entry stamp meets that as well as a visa does. Citizens of more than 90 countries, and holders of a visa or residence permit from 50 listed places, need no Georgian visa.

Can we get married in Georgia on an e-visa?

Yes. An e-visa makes your stay lawful for the days it covers, which is what the registry checks. Bring the printed visa with your passport, and make sure the wedding date falls inside the permitted stay.

Which countries can enter Georgia without a visa?

Citizens of 91 countries can, including all 27 EU states, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Israel and the 6 Gulf states. All of them get a full year except China, whose citizens get 30 days for tourism.

Can UAE residents enter Georgia without a visa?

Yes. A valid UAE residence permit lets you enter Georgia without a Georgian visa and stay 90 days in any 180, whatever your nationality. Citizens of 17 countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria, need at least 1 year left on the permit on the day they enter.

How many days do we need in Georgia to get married?

One working day can be enough, because registration can take place on the day you apply. We still plan on 2 weekdays, since a busy office can ask you to come back, and more if you want an apostille before you fly home.

Is there a residency requirement to marry in Georgia?

No. Georgian law has no residency rule and no minimum stay, so you can register the day you arrive if the office can fit you in. You also choose which office or Wedding House registers you.

Can our wedding witnesses be foreign visitors too?

Yes. Georgian law sets no nationality rule for witnesses: you need 2 adults with full legal capacity, each with an identity document. A foreign witness's passport is accepted without a Georgian translation when it shows the name in Latin letters.

Can we marry if one of us has overstayed in Georgia?

No. Each foreign partner has to prove a lawful stay on the day of registration, and an expired stay cannot meet that condition. The registry cannot register the marriage until that partner is in Georgia on a valid basis again.

Does getting married in Georgia give me residency?

Not by itself. A marriage between 2 foreign visitors changes neither partner's permitted stay. A foreigner who marries a Georgian citizen can apply for a residence permit as their spouse, at least 40 calendar days before their lawful stay ends.
