A pregnancy before marriage puts the paperwork on a clock for couples in the UAE. A parent has 30 days from the birth to apply for the birth certificate, with either a marriage certificate or a legalized acknowledgment of parentage. Georgia marries foreign couples the day they apply and asks nothing about pregnancy. Here is what UAE law says, how the Georgian certificate becomes valid there, and how to time it all against a due date.
Quick summary
- Georgia asks nothing about pregnancy and requires no medical test, and a couple with passports, 2 adult witnesses and proof of lawful stay can register the day they apply.
- A UAE birth certificate is applied for within 30 days of the birth, with a marriage certificate or an acknowledgment of parentage legalized by an embassy or a notary.
- Article 410 of the UAE Crimes and Penalties Law rules out a criminal case once the parents marry or acknowledge the child and the child has identity and travel documents.
- A Georgian certificate counts in the UAE after 3 stamps: Georgian legalization (GEL 30 to 150), the UAE Embassy in Tbilisi (USD 41) and UAE MOFA (AED 150).
- The UAE Embassy publishes no processing time, so marry early in the pregnancy and pay for same-day legalization if the due date is close.

Can You Get Married in Georgia While Pregnant?
Yes. Georgian law asks the same of every couple, and pregnancy is not part of it. Nothing on the registry's official list is medical: you bring a passport each, proof that you are in Georgia lawfully, identity documents for 2 adult witnesses and, if either of you was married before, a divorce decree or death certificate with an apostille or legalization.
Couples who marry in Georgia from the UAE can enter on their UAE residence permit, which admits any nationality visa-free for 90 days in any 180. Citizens of 17 listed countries, Pakistan and Bangladesh among them, need at least 1 year left on the permit on the day they land.
You apply together at a Public Service Hall and can register the same day; the free registration without a ceremony runs Monday to Friday. An office can ask you to come back when it is too busy, although Georgia's registration rules name the birth of a child among the special circumstances in which same-day registration is mandatory.
From our Tbilisi team
We book couples working to a due date into a weekday morning registration and order same-day legalization as soon as the certificate is issued. It costs GEL 150 instead of GEL 30, and it saves waiting until the 8th working day before the certificate can go to the UAE Embassy.
What UAE Law Says About Pregnancy Outside Marriage
The rules for unmarried parents sit in 2 federal laws: the Crimes and Penalties Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021), in force since 2 January 2022, and Federal Decree-Law No. 10 of 2022 on registering births and deaths, in force since 15 October 2022. Both treat an acknowledgment of the child as an alternative to marriage.
| Law | What it says |
|---|---|
| Crimes and Penalties Law, Article 409 | A consensual relationship between 2 unmarried adults is prosecuted only on a complaint from a spouse or guardian, who can withdraw it |
| Crimes and Penalties Law, Article 410 | Both parents of a child born outside marriage face at least 2 years' incarceration, but no case can be filed once they marry or acknowledge the child and the child has identity and travel documents from either parent's country |
| Births and Deaths Decree-Law, Article 7 | A parent applies for the birth certificate within 30 days of the birth, with a marriage certificate or an acknowledgment of parentage legalized by the parents' embassy or a notary |
| Births and Deaths Decree-Law, Article 11 | Where the father is unknown, the certificate is issued on a court order based on the mother's acknowledgment |
That leaves 2 routes to a registered birth: marry, or sign an acknowledgment of parentage and have it legalized. Either one answers Article 410 once the baby's identity and travel documents follow. Marriage also gives you a document an acknowledgment cannot stand in for, the certificate a UAE family needs when one partner sponsors the other's residence visa.
Registering the Birth With a Georgian Marriage Certificate
The hospital reports the birth within 72 hours. A parent then has 30 days from the birth to apply for the birth certificate, with the hospital's birth notification, the marriage certificate or the legalized acknowledgment, and the mother's passport or ID card, plus the father's.
A certificate issued in Georgia is a foreign document, so the UAE accepts it only once all 3 stamps are on the original. The birth certificate itself is issued in Arabic, and an English copy is available on request.
Papers for the birth certificate if you married in Georgia
- The birth notification from the hospital
- The original Georgian marriage certificate with its Georgian legalization, UAE Embassy attestation and UAE MOFA attestation
- The English translation of the certificate, if the office asks for one
- The mother's passport or ID card, and the father's
- An application made no later than 30 days after the birth
A late application is still accepted, but it goes to a committee to decide instead of being issued directly. If the baby arrives before the chain is finished, the law's other route still registers the birth on time: an acknowledgment of parentage, legalized by your embassy or a notary.
Making the Georgian Certificate Valid in the UAE
The UAE is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so a Georgian certificate reaches it through legalization. Of the 3 stamps, 2 are collected in Tbilisi and the last in the UAE.
- Georgian legalization. A Public Service Hall legalizes the certificate and collects the Foreign Ministry's stamp in the same step. The fee sets the speed: GEL 150 the same day, GEL 120 by the 2nd working day, GEL 60 by the 4th or GEL 30 by the 8th.
- UAE Embassy in Tbilisi. The consular section attests the legalized original for USD 41. It publishes no processing time, which makes this the stage to leave slack for.
- UAE MOFA. The final attestation by UAE MOFA is applied for on mofa.gov.ae or the MOFA app and costs AED 150. A courier returns the certificate inside the UAE in 3 working days for AED 40 or in 1 for AED 150, plus VAT.
An apostille will not work in the UAE
Most countries want an apostille, so it is the stamp couples ask for by habit. The UAE Embassy attests only a legalized original, so an apostilled certificate has to go back to the Public Service Hall for legalization, and with a due date approaching those are days you may not have.
Georgia issues the certificate in Georgian, and an English translation from the Public Service Hall costs GEL 30 a page. Ask the office that registers the birth whether it also wants the certificate in Arabic.
The fastest route to a certificate the UAE accepts
- Registration at a Public Service Hall, weekday, no ceremony
- Free
- Same-day Georgian legalization
- GEL 150
- English translation at the Public Service Hall
- GEL 30 per page
- UAE Embassy attestation in Tbilisi
- USD 41
- UAE MOFA attestation
- AED 150
- MOFA courier in 1 working day, before VAT
- AED 150
- Same-day legalization, 1 translated page, 1-day courier
- GEL 180, USD 41 and AED 300
Legalization by the 8th working day costs GEL 30 instead of GEL 150, and the 3-day courier AED 40. Flights, the hotel and VAT come on top.
How Long It Takes, Counted Back From the Due Date
Georgia registers a marriage the day you apply, so the wedding is the quick part. The stamps set the timetable, and the one stage with no published time is the UAE Embassy.
| Stage | Time | What sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Registration, Tbilisi | The day you apply | Both of you and 2 witnesses in person, Monday to Friday for the free registration |
| Georgian legalization | Same day to the 8th working day | The fee, from GEL 150 down to GEL 30 |
| UAE Embassy attestation, Tbilisi | No published time | The embassy |
| UAE MOFA attestation | Courier in 1 or 3 working days | The courier option, AED 150 or AED 40 |
| Birth certificate application | Within 30 days of the birth | Federal Decree-Law No. 10 of 2022 |
Only the registration needs both of you in Tbilisi. The stamps that follow are paperwork on the original, so you can fly home while the certificate goes through the embassy and reaches you by courier.
Plan backward from the due date rather than forward from the wedding. The attested original should be in your hands before the birth, and the embassy stage is the one nobody can promise a date for, so the trip belongs early in the pregnancy.
From our Tbilisi team
We plan these trips as early in the pregnancy as the couple can manage. Airlines set their own limits and medical-letter rules for pregnant passengers, and they vary between carriers, so check your airline's rules before you book the flights to Tbilisi.
Marrying in Abu Dhabi Instead of Georgia
The option that needs no flight is a civil marriage in Abu Dhabi. It is open to couples who are not UAE nationals, whatever their religion, and to non-Muslim UAE nationals, and residents can attend the ceremony by video link.
| What differs | Georgia | Abu Dhabi civil marriage |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest route | Registration the day you apply | Urgent service within 1 working day, once the court approves the application |
| State fee | Free on weekdays without a ceremony | AED 2,500 urgent, or AED 300 for up to 10 working days |
| Witnesses | 2 adults | None required |
| Before it registers a UAE birth | Georgian legalization, UAE Embassy and MOFA attestation | Issued by a UAE court, with no foreign-document chain |
| For a home country | A second original can take an apostille | MOFA attestation, then the home country's own rules |
If you both qualify and the due date is close, Abu Dhabi's urgent service is the quicker road to a certificate the UAE accepts, because there is no embassy stage to wait on. Georgia fits couples who want to marry on the day they apply, without a court approving the application first, and those who also need an apostilled original for a home country such as India, the UK or the Philippines.
